Placement Case Study

Case Study: Imogen Wild, Brand Marketing Assistant

Meet Imogen, who currently works in Marketing here at Pricecheck. Imogen joined us in June 2024 in a Trading Placement programme. She’s recently returned to Sheffield Hallam University to study for her final year in Business and Marketing, whilst working for us part time. She’s keen to expand her skill set and develop her experience of the company further.

What sparked your interest in the placement at Pricecheck?

I was initially interested in Pricecheck after I attended a Sheffield Hallam University careers fair, where they had a stand. Lucy Roberts from the People Team was extremely friendly and welcoming when I approached her. She explained that Pricecheck has a long history with the University and many of its students have had placement and graduate roles there.

After that I was hooked! Pricecheck has its own in-house marketing team which works to market the business, but also many of their brand partners – the idea of having that mix was great, allowing me to explore both B2B and B2C marketing techniques. Managing clients’ social media accounts and attending trade shows really excited me about a placement at Pricecheck.

What were your views on the placement recruitment process?

The entire recruitment process was smooth and enjoyable. It began with a phone call, followed by an online Teams meeting, and ended with an in-person interview. Each stage was well organised, and the conversations felt friendly and relaxed, rather than stressful or intimidating.

What skills did you develop during your placement?

I have developed many skills at Pricecheck over my 12-month placement, including public speaking, copywriting, and time management. At University, public speaking was something that used to scare me - I would be apprehensive before any kind of public speaking exercise. However, since doing a placement, I have attended careers fairs, hosted marketing challenges with the University of Sheffield, delivered marketing talks and even talked to the public at consumer trade shows. These experiences have developed my confidence, as I’ve had to speak to new people in informal situations and speak in front of a crowd!

My copywriting skills have progressed as I have been responsible for writing blogs for a number of brands, writing SEO content for our Amazon listings and writing engaging captions for our brands’ social media channels. I also developed my time management skills, by understanding the importance of priorities and voicing this with my manager to ensure that they also agreed.

What did an average day look like?

Every day is different at Pricecheck, which is one of the reasons I’ve loved my placement so much. During my time, I’ve been given so many opportunities. One day I might be writing optimised content for new products we’re launching on Amazon, and the next I could be working at a trade show, selling on the stand and representing the brand!

What was your favourite project that you worked on?

One of my favourite projects I worked on was an Amazon refresh for a cosmetics brand. Although this was a big project at the time, looking back I am proud of the way I worked and handled the pressure. I was given creative freedom to refresh the whole brand store and Amazon content, which made me feel valued by the team, as they trusted my skills and knowledge to work on this. Due to the scale of the project, my organisational skills were enhanced too.

What advice would you give to someone interested in a Pricecheck placement?

My top tips would be…

1.      Show interest – Get in touch with Lucy Roberts to express your interest through LinkedIn and attend University careers fairs. Show that you are interested in the business and let them know exactly why!

2.      Be passionate – Express your passion about the industry you are wanting to do a placement in. It’s always great if you have any experience in the field, such as any online courses, projects you’ve done at University, or any relevant experience

3.      Be yourself – There’s nothing better than seeing someone’s passion and personality shine through. The recruiters know that it’s hard to gain industry experience at the stage of applying for a placement, which is why it’s so important to be your authentic yourself!
